apple seeds Charitable Giving

Auctions - School / Community / Nonprofit

Every year since we opened our doors, apple seeds donates to school auctions throughout NYC, as well as non-profit/charitable organizations that are close to our (or our members’) hearts. Since we opened in 2007, apple seeds has donated in-kind to preschools and ongoing schools in our community, as well as at auctions for causes close to our hearts.

Madison Square Park

apple seeds has supported the park in various ways since before we opened in 2007…we are appreciate the role that Madison Square Park plays in our community, especially for kids.

apple seeds participates in the park’s free events by donating activity tables and our songs for seeds band. These events draw thousands of families, and our sponsorship money is used to fund additional free park programs –the Kids Summer Concert Series & Art in the Park.

 

Cookies for Kids Cancer

Every year we do something different to support this cause closest to our hearts.  In our personal lives and with our apple seeds community, we are constantly working to raise money and awareness for Pediatric Cancer research.

Some standouts include:

  • In 2011, together with our apple seeds community, we raised over $100,00 through a community-wide bake sale (and additional donations).  The incredibly kind people at Glad (the plastic bag company) matched our total – putting us over the $200,000 mark.  With the money we raised, we directly funded two pediatric cancer trials.  One of them was named one of the ten most significant scientific advancements in 2011 by Discover Magazine.
  • In 2012, we raised almost $50,000 through an apple seeds community bake sale.
  • In 2013, with our members and apple seeds community, we baked thousands of cookies and handed them out to pediatric cancer hospitals in the northeast on Mother’s Day.
  • In 2014, we have raised $11,448.92, so far.  We did this through an apple seeds bake sale, followed by a 5k run that 4 of our 6 children ran over Memorial Day

 

Room to Grow

RTG enriches the lives of babies born into poverty throughout their critical first three years of development.

City Harvest

City Harvest rescues food for the nearly two million New Yorkers facing hunger each year.

Broad Channel Fire Department
Rockaway, Queens, NY

After the devastation our city faced after Hurricane Sandy, we gathered our friends and apple seeds community and raised $6,910.17 for the Broad Channel Fire Department, after we learned that they lost their trucks and their firehouse.

The BCVFD recently wrote us with this update:

“The funding you provided directly helped not only our department but all the people in Broad Channel who depend on our services and also those in the Rockaways who we assist from time to time….This building will not only be a center of operations for the BCVFD but will also be a staging area for all NYC and NYS responding agencies, something that was sorely missed during and after Hurricane Sandy.”

 

Progeria Research Foundation

The Progeria Research Foundation aims to find treatments and the cure for Progeria and its aging related disorders.

In the last two years, through participating in their annual spin-a-thon, we raised over $5,000. This money has gone directly to medical research that will help find a cure for this deadly and rare disease currently affecting our friend’s young daughter.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

JDRF aims to improve lives by curing Type 1 Diabetes.

With the help of an apple seeds free family membership raffle (dreamed up and led by our kids) we raised over $6,000 last year for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Sanctuary for Families

Sanctuary for Families provides crisis intervention, emergency and transitional housing, individual and group counseling, job readiness and mentoring programs.

Moms in Training

apple seeds supports The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by sharing information about Moms In Training with our members, as well as encouraging moms to get involved.  Many of our members have heard about the program through apple seeds and together have raised tens of thousands of dollars to support this organization’s good work

From our friends at Moms in Training: “We just wanted to thank you again for everything you have done to support Moms In Training as a dedicated partner this season.  We very much appreciate your support and immense impact you’ve made on the program’s success!  Our first ever 2012 NYC Moms In Training team consisted of 30 Moms raising $45,000.  This season, 240 NYC Moms raised over $360,000 and 25 additional cities launched Moms In Training, bringing our national total raised to $1 million!

 In 1964, the five-year survival rate for a child with ALL, the most common type of childhood leukemia, was 3%.  Today it’s a little over 90%!"

Kenya Education Fund

The KEF mission is to provide disadvantaged students in Kenya, and their schools, with support and educational resources so that they may improve their communities and break the cycle of poverty in Kenya.

The United Nations Children’s Fund is working toward the day when ZERO children die from preventable causes and every child has a safe and healthy childhood.

Future Star School
Kathmandu, Nepal

Deep in Kathmandu lies a school providing education to 500 orphans and other underprivileged children.

We personally help several of the students with tuition support, and we plan to set up an apple seeds scholarship fund so that our members and other NYC families are able to give to this country close to our hearts, and more specifically to this community of children in need.
